Lucy Griffiths, Co-Director of ADR Wales and Professor of Epidemiology at Swansea University Medical School, has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor Griffiths is among 74 leading social scientists recognised this year for outstanding contributions to research, policy and practice. The Academy’s Fellowship recognises distinguished individuals whose work has made a significant impact on addressing major challenges facing society, following a rigorous and independent peer-review process.

Professor Griffiths’ research uses longitudinal cohort studies and linked administrative data to examine how social and environmental factors influence the health and development of children and young people. Her work focuses particularly on vulnerable groups, including children involved with social care services and those living in poverty or experiencing adversity. She also provides strategic leadership across major UK research investments and has led large-scale, policy-focused data research programmes funded by organisations including the Economic and Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, Nuffield Foundation, Wellcome Trust, ADR UK and Health Data Research UK.

Professor Griffiths said the recognition reflected the “support and collaboration of many colleagues” throughout her career. She said she looked forward to using the growing opportunities offered by linked administrative data to advance research that could improve the lives of children and families.
