ADR Wales was again delighted to support the 2025 Population Data Science Internship Programme, which culminated with intern presentations at a showcase event on Wednesday at the Data Science Building at Swansea University. The audience of 50+ also heard keynote speeches from Stephanie Howarth, Co-Director of ADR Wales, and Professor Charlotte Rees, Pro Vice Chancellor at Swansea University for the Medicine, Health and Life Science Faculty.

This year’s summer intern cohort included 20 interns. Each intern was assigned to a project with mentors and line managers from the various research centres based within the Population Data Science group.

ADR Wales hosted eight of the interns, and paired them with researchers from across its research themes. The project list included:

  • Development of the Healthy Households website
  • A review of literature on outcomes of careers support and guidance for children and adults
  • The critical role of 20mph in Wales and its potential impact on traffic injuries for children
  • Understanding risk of youth homelessness in Wales: Applying data science techniques to third sector (Upstream Cymru) data
  • Data-driven insights into socio-economic and healthcare inequalities
  • Managing confounding effects in the MAGENTA project
  • A review of literature on the barriers and facilitators to self-harm and suicide support and intervention in primary care
  • Enhancing longitudinal data science by understanding policy impacts on key measures over time

Congratulations to the intern Samyuktha Babuganesh, who received the ‘Best Research’ award for her work and presentation on youth homelessness. She was paired with ADR Wales team members Ian Thomas, Peter Mackie and Cathrine Richards.
