The team behind the ADR Wales Major Societal Challenges programme of work has led a study which has created a comprehensive national ethnicity spine for Wales.

The national ethnicity spine for Wales is the result of significant developments carried out by the team, which have been documented in a recent paper.

Professor Ashley Akbari, Hoda Abbasizanjani and Stuart Bedston, who are based within Swansea University’s Population Data Science team, are among a team who have leveraged 22 years of anonymised health and administrative data from over 4.2 million individuals and multiple data sources to construct a longitudinal research ready data asset (RRDA) of harmonised ethnic group records for the population of Wales.

The RRDA has helped to address the urgent need for improved ethnic group data in research, ensuring consistency and reliability for researchers. In discussion with policy colleagues in Welsh Government and collaborators across Wales and the wider UK, the RRDA will continue to be developed by the team as part of the ongoing ADR Wales Major Societal Challenges work programme to inform research into inequalities.
